Celeste, Tony and Adam returned to Oakland Monday Oct 6th day via Interstate-5, tired, but glad to have made the trip.
The next morning Adam and Tony re-started their grand road tour heading north on the 101 to the California coast. The mountains were very green.

One odd sight we had, driving up through infamous Humboldt County: coming over a crest of a hill, we saw a helicopter with an obvious thick cable hanging from below it. As the helicopter moved on, we could discern a huge bundle of vegetation hanging at the end, perhaps 12 feet on a side. But why in the heck would a helicopter have shrubbery hanging off of it? It obviously wasn't for timber. Then there was the skunky smell.... well, we were a bit slow, but we did figure out soon that it must be a raid on a pot farm, and they were dropping the 'evidence' off at a staging area near the freeway. Just an odd thing to come across.

Our efforts to re-contact our potential couchsurfing host in Eureka were unsuccessful, so we ended up finding a coupon for a hotel room in Arcata. It ended up bean a great deal. We had time for a swim in their pool and soak in the hot-tub before venturing out for mediocre Chinese food. Arcata/Eureka had a high percentage of unkept grungy people. It made us feel like the community was too poor to afford haircuts, razors, soap or new peanut oil in the Chinese food fryer at dinner. Not endearing, but the natural scenery was just stunning.

The next day we altered plans a bit. We knew we wanted to end up in Eugene, OR that night, but the originally proposed route would have taken 7+ hours through windy country highways. Great if you have time to stop and look at plants, but we didn't feel like doing so much driving, so we opted for a more leisurely 5 hour drive, continuing up the coast to Crescent City, then cutting inland up to the Oregon border and Cave Junction. We got checked out by a cute trucker, and saw an elk on the side of the road, thoughtfully mowing someone’s lawn,
