A day-trip north of Seattle

Fall color in Seattle.

10/21 Tuesday- After a slightly groggy waking up from the previous night’s festivities, Adam and I took Will & Miriam’s two dogs for a walk. They are a Bulldog, big for their breed, and love to jump up and play. They were pretty good on the leash, only pulling a moderate amount, and by the end of the walk they were even starting to get the hang of sitting before crossing the street. We walked the Capitol Hill area, and saw some fabulous homes and gardens.

The neighborhood was obviously upscale, with many well tended yards, some with rockwork or other adornments. Tony was instantly jealous of the seemingly natural ability to grow clematis, Campanulas, Rhododendrons, and Japanese maples.

Adam with the pups on a stone bench in a front yard.

We got back to the house later than expected (guess we are getting used to having long walks!) and had to rush off for lunch with Adam’s cousin Kim. We caught up with her at P.F. Chang’s in Linnwood, a few minutes north of Seattle.

Kim and Adam had a great time catching up, and Tony tried to not be so distracted by the rather attractive wait-staff (sorry Kimmie, I hope I wasn’t rude!!) Tony was distracted enough to forget to bring out the camera. (Bad Tony, no dessert!).

After that we hopped back in the car and made a mad dash north to see Hope, McKenzie and Rob in Oak Harbor. Oak Harbor is out on an island, connected to the mainland (actually other islands, connected to the mainland) through Deception Pass, a great bridge that spans a narrow inlet. The moss was deep and spongy, and Adam collected some seeds for Sedum spathifolium. Very picturesque.

We arrived in Oak Harbor just before dark, and got to see Hope’s place – a big four bedroom house amidst wonderful trees. They are in process of several upgrades, but the new floors look great! We talked about all sorts of things from remodels to McKenzie’s split school-day, and they took us out to a great little Mexican restaurant- Estibans, where we stuffed ourselves on enchiladas and a chile rellano. Hope got the biggest margarita you can imagine. (only surpassed by their “fishbowl” size, I am told). And then we learned of all the devious practical jokes that Hope and McKenzie are capable of. Watch you back, Rob! Hope (and therefore by relation, McKenzie) is absolutely crazy, but we love them anyways! They are both a lot of fun. McKenzie has grown up so fast (we so rarely get to see her) and is becoming quite an impressive, pretty , & witty young woman.

We joined Rob at home after dinner. He’s had drills all week at the Navel Air Station, and was dead tired. Still he was gracious enough to put off a shower and his dinner to visit with us for a bit. All too soon we had to go, having a two hour drive back to Seattle and bed, before our long trek to Missoula the following day.
